Ben is reviewing Mercury SF again!

Mercury SF

Grace called me from Saint Anne's church (where she teaches CCD) and calmly stated that her tire was flat. I asked her if she was serious and she said, "well, the tires is sticking out from under the wheel." I proceed to get ready and I take a cab from her place to the Sunset.

I walk up to the car and see that her tire is completely deflated.

Long story short, she needed new tires. What is open on Sunday for new tires? In all of San Francisco the only place that was is Costco. So I put the tiny space saver spare on and we drive to Costco. $522 later the car is in for a new set of BFG tires.

We were really hungry and wanted to watch the Gayker game so we decided to look for a place to eat. Lucky for us Mercury SF is two blocks east of Costco so we take the walk in the balmy 82 degree San Francisco heat.

I know in my last review I blasted Mercury for what I determined as a too "bourgeoisie" attempt at bringing Filipino cuisine to light in San Francisco.

I must say that the brunch is what offsets that thought with me. Brunch was something special, it was authentic, delicious and was served in a HUGE portion. We started off with the sweet potato fries which is served with a nice sriracha mayonaise, it is a great way to start a meal even in the morning. I also order the bottomless bloody mary, which had a LOT of vodka in it. I ended up drinking three, and spent the rest of the afternoon in a food coma/slight buzz combo that is not very comfortable.

Grace ordered the Chicken Fried Chicken Loco Moco. It is a huge fliet of chicken that is battered and seasoned very liberally. The chicken is smothered with gravy and sits on a bed of white jasmine rice. As a topping, Mercury places two eggs over easy on top and adds more gravy. From the bites I had, the dish was great. Grace finished it!

I ordered the Tocislog, for those who don't know what tocsilog is it is a breakfast dish that combines tocino (a marinated sweet pork dish that is fried or grilled), garlic fried rice and eggs. Anyone that knows me well will tell you that my kryptonite is egg yolk. I ordered my eggs scrambled of course, well that is the beginning of the story. We watch the Gaykers cheat their way into another win and the waitress refills my bottomless bloody mary very attentively.

The waitress walks up with our food, and let me tell you what I saw... TWO BIG YELLOW CIRCLES ON MY EGGS. She had the order in as over easy.

I could've panicked, I could've been a whoreface and made a scene, or she could have gotten my order right and I would have just eaten my food. OMG. Raw yolk! All over my food! EWWWWW.

I decided to get over myself and try the eggs how they were. (NOTE: I thought V8/Tomato Juice/Bloody Marys would be gross and yet now I crave them) I took my first wet, yellow, red and garlic fried bite and damn it I didn't die. I wouldn't like specifically ask for eggs over easy, but I guess I don't hate them. The texture didn't make me gag like I thought it would. Anyway, 2 minutes later the huge plate was empty and I gained another 3 pounds. Delicious and plentiful, a success in my book!

If you are looking for Filipino breakfast food, GO HERE. GO HERE. GO HERE!

I give it a "Damn I was wrong about this one, holler at it!"
